NGC 2685, which looks like a dolphin jumping through a series of hoops, is one of the more unusual galaxies in the sky. The “dolphin” is bright and fuzzy; the “hoops” surrounding it are dust lanes in which new stars are forming. If a being on a planet that orbited one of the stars in this galaxy were to look up into the night sky, he or she would see a band of stars similar to the Milky Way that appears in our sky on a moonless night. But in NGC 2685 the night sky would also be illuminated by the enormous dolphinlike inner portion of the galaxy.
